{"id":258,"date":"2019-09-21T23:57:03","date_gmt":"2019-09-22T03:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karenkaron.com\/blog\/?p=258"},"modified":"2019-09-21T23:57:03","modified_gmt":"2019-09-22T03:57:03","slug":"aspect-ratio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karenkaron.com\/blog\/aspect-ratio\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspect Ratio"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is Aspect Ratio?<\/strong> Aspect Ratio (AR) is a number\nthat represents the relationship between the thickness of the wire (wire\ndiameter) used to make a jump ring and the inner diameter of that jump\nring.&nbsp; Each chain maille weave has an\nideal AR, or an ideal AR range, that ensures jump rings of that AR can be used\nto make the weave and produce the desired look and degree of flexibility.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you buy jump rings, the inner diameter sizes listed\nusually represent the mandrel size used to make the jump ring and not the\nactual inner diameter of the jump ring.&nbsp; The\nactual inner diameter will be slightly different from the mandrel size due to <strong>spring\nback<\/strong>*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There can be variations in stated jump ring sizes from\ndifferent jump ring suppliers and even in different batches and colors from the\nsame supplier.&nbsp; In addition, different\nmetals have different working properties. Therefore, the degree of <strong>spring\nback<\/strong>* varies from metal to metal and can affect the finished size of jump\nrings made from different metals but coiled on the same mandrel.&nbsp; This is why AR is a more accurate way to\nchoose appropriate jump rings for your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How Do You Determine Aspect Ratio? <\/strong>To determine\nAspect Ratio, divide the inner diameter (ID) of the jump ring by the wire\ndiameter (WD) of the jump ring (see formula 1 below).&nbsp; Make sure that both your WD and ID\nmeasurements are in the same measuring system (imperial or metric). &nbsp;Note that the gauge of the wire is not the WD\nmeasurement.&nbsp; Also, be aware that there\nare 2 commonly used wire gauge systems AWG and SWG. You can easily find wire\ngauge charts and imperial to metric (and vice versa) converters on the internet\nto help you get your numbers right. Here are a few links that I\u2019ve found useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cadceptual.co.uk\/images\/uploaded\/guides\/awg-swg-tables-download-original.pdf\">AWG\/SWG Wire Gauge Chart<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rapidtables.com\/convert\/length\/mm-to-inch.html\">MM to Inch Converter<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rapidtables.com\/convert\/length\/inch-to-mm.html\">Inch to MM Converter<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you determine the AR of the jump rings you are using\nfor a particular weave, you can use that AR number to help you determine what\nsize jump rings in other wire gauges will also work with that weave (see\nformula 2 below). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do AR math, you\u2019ll need to know these 3 measurements \u2013 ID\n(inner diameter), WD (wire diameter), and OD (outer diameter).&nbsp; ID and WD are the most important measurements\nfor chain maille.&nbsp; Here are the formulas\nyou will need to do AR math:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>To Determine Aspect Ratio: ID <\/strong><strong>\u00f7\nWD = AR<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>To Determine Jump Ring Size: WD x AR = ID<\/strong><\/li><li>To Determine ID:&nbsp;\nOD \u2013 (2 x WD)<\/li><li>To Determine OD:&nbsp;\nID + (2 x WD)<\/li><li>To Determine WD:&nbsp;&nbsp; ID \u00f7 AR = WD<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You made a Byzantine chain using 18g AWG, 3.5mm ID jump rings and now you want to make the same weave using 16g AWG jump rings.\u00a0 How do you figure out the appropriate ID for the 16g AWG jump rings? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, determine the AR of the\njump rings you used to make your 18g AWG Byzantine chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3.5mm ID \u00f7 1.024mm WD = 3.417 AR (round to 3.4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now multiply that AR by the 16g AWG wire\ndiameter to determine the correct ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3.4 AR x 1.290mm WD = 4.386mm ID (round to 4.4mm)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closest commercially available ID size is 4.5mm.\u00a0 Therefore, you would buy 16g AWG, 4.5mm ID jump rings to make your 16g AWG Byzantine chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if you want to make that\nByzantine chain using 16g SWG jump rings instead?&nbsp; You can use the same formula.&nbsp; Just plug in the 16g SWG wire diameter\nmeasurement instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a03.4 AR x 1.626mm WD = 5.5284mm ID (round to 5.5mm)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, you\u2019ll need 16g SWG, 5.5mm ID jump rings to make your Byzantine chain.\u00a0 I wanted to get an imperial ID measurement instead, so I used the link above to determine that 5.5mm = 7\/32\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All you need to know is the AR of any weave you want to make (you can find recommended ARs for weaves on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailleartisans.org\/\">M.A.I.L. website<\/a>). Then, you can use this same formula to determine the size jump rings you\u2019ll need.  Just multiply the AR by the wire diameter you want to use. **<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the examples presented, the wire diameter measurements were taken from wire gauge charts and the ID measurements used reflect mandrel size.\u00a0 For many of your basic weaves, those numbers are good enough.\u00a0 However, some weaves are much more sensitive.\u00a0 When a more accurate result is required, use calipers to measure the actual WD and ID of your jump rings and use those measurements in your calculations.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>NOTE:\u00a0 The above applies to weaves that are made using 1 jump ring size and round wire only. \u00a0Using multiple sizes in a weave, or using fancy wire shapes, will necessitate some experimentation. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>*Spring back &#8211; When you release wire after coiling it around a mandrel to make jump rings, the wire attempts to return to its original shape and unwinds a bit. \u00a0This results in jump rings with an inner diameter that is slightly larger than the size of the mandrel. I made a short video to demonstrate this. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/1069431019736900\/videos\/vb.1069431019736900\/1138594129487255\/?type=2&amp;theater\">Click here to see it.<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>**Keep in mind, this is not a perfect world.\u00a0 There are real-world variables that the math does not account for, such as differences in jump rings based on supplier, batch, color, metal, etc.\u00a0 Therefore, you still might have to experiment a little with sizes to find the perfect jump rings for your project.\u00a0 When purchasing jump rings, always reference not only the stated size of the jump rings, but also the supplier\u2019s stated <strong>AR<\/strong> of the jump rings.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Aspect Ratio?
